Where is Your Confidence?
Confidence is defined as: full trust; belief in the powers; trustworthiness; or reliability of a person or thing. Now the question becomes “In Whom does your confidence lie?”
As Christians, our confidence comes through Christ. We have Boldness because of His sacrifice. He gives us courage and confidence, so that we can come to God by faith [Ephesians 3:11-12].
At one time in our life, we’ve all been hurt, lied to or let down by someone else. Because of this, we find it difficult to have confidence in anyone or anything. However, Psalm 118:8-9 warns us not to put our trust in people, but in the Lord. Why, because people will let you down and forget their promises, but God will never forget His promises to you.
A few years ago, I was in a convenience store when a guy decided he was going to rob it. With the gun in my side, the yelling and screaming within the store, I felt peace. I managed to take a few steps back, and was reaching for a glass bottle to take the guy out when the Spirit instructed me to let the Lord handle this.
The guy turned to look at me, starting at my feet and slowly looked all the way up past by top of my head. He then turned around and never looked back at me again. What did he see? I’m not sure, but I know that the Lord promises us that He will be our security and protect us [Proverbs 3:26]
If I had placed my confidence in my desire, or that glass bottle, I might not be here today. You must put God first knowing He will take care of you.
The bible gives us a great example of total confidence in Acts 16:22-31. Paul and Silas were publicly beaten. After beating them black and blue, they were placed into the maximum security cell in the jail and clamped leg irons on them.
Instead of asking why this happened or questioning God, they did something radical. They began praying and singing loudly to God. The other prisoners couldn’t believe it. Then, without warning, there was a huge earthquake. The jailhouse started shaking, every door flew open and all the prisoners were loose.
When the guard saw the doors opened, he assumed all the prisoners had escaped, he was going to kill himself, but Paul stopped him by letting him know everyone was still there. The guard led Paul and Silas out of the jail and asked what he needed to do to be saved. They told him to put his total confidence in Jesus.
The next time you are in a bad situation, don’t listen to those around you trying to discourage you, start praising God. Stop trying to rationalize your situation and start putting your confidence in God.
Remember the story of Paul and Silas, who were not only delivered, but were witnesses to everyone around them.
Total confidence goes beyond reason!
