A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand

“Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.” [Matthew 12:25 NIV]

LincolnIn June of 1858, Abraham Lincoln delivered this famous speech when accepting the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate from Illinois. In July of that year he challenged his Democrat opponent, Stephen Douglas to a series of debates over admitting Kansas into the union as a slave state, and, to a large extent, over the future of slavery and of the union itself. Lincoln, of course, represented the anti-slavery position and lost the Senate race. However, the skill with which Lincoln debated Douglas helped catapult him to the Republican Party’s nomination for president in 1860, a race which he won.

Over 150 years after Lincoln delivered that compelling speech, we are once again facing “a house divided against itself.”

Regardless of your party affiliation, we must stand together as Christians. We must not allow division to separate us from our common purpose. We are called to pray for our governing leaders and live a Christ Centered life.

Today I urge you to pray for our Nation and its leaders. Pray so we will not repeat history, but rise above the division through Christ.
